Allen Park is a 10-acre park located in northwest Austin named for George W. Allen (b. unknown – d.1911), an Austin attorney and Judge. The tract of land was originally acquired by Travis County for use as a gravel pit, with the stipulation that the land be dedicated for public use when its use as a gravel pit had ended. Renovations to the land in 1977 included the addition of hiking trails and picnic facilities, and Allen Memorial Park was finally opened by Travis County in 1978. The park features a panoramic view of Austin and is used for recreational activities such as picnicking and hiking.
